Powell Plaza at Hayward Field Eugene, Oregon Powell Plaza was developed to address two primary goals: provide a grand entrance for Hayward Field, and provide a place to celebrate the storied histories of the site and University of Oregon Track & Field programs. Hayward’s new “front door” is framed by massive masonry and concrete columns and walls aligned in a radial pattern to accentuate the track’s 3rd turn. Centered in the space is a large ornamental gate and sign. Its orientation provides a direct visual portal into the track and field from the major street intersection and plaza beyond. Several interpretive elements are integrated amongst the architectural walls. Two large story boards describe the history of the facility and the legendary coaches and athletes of the program. Outstanding achievements by UO athletes and teams are noted on over 100 individual displays. Recognizing the site’s global influence is the “Olympic Pole” which points to the cities where UO athletes received an Olympic medal. A bronze bust and plaque within the plaza honors legendary UO coach Bill Hayward. Within the facility, major spectator improvements were made including; a trackside rail for fans to get close to the action, terraced seating that allows a unique amphitheater experience for over 200 patrons, and a convenient concessions area for the northeast corner of the complex.
