LTD Springfield Station Springfield, Oregon
Springfield Station incorporates a design concept of celebration and sustainable treatment of stormwater throughout the entire facility. Water from rooftops and paved surfaces is gathered and conveyed through a series of gardens and stormwater bioswales to both showcase rainwater and to reduce or remove any pollutants prior to the stormwater’s discharge into the adjacent, historic Springfield Millrace. The centerpiece of the transit station is the Platform Garden: a garden where the rainwater off the shed roofs of the transit shelters falls in sheets into a rich and varied planting area mimicking a natural stream course. The seasonal plantings in this garden were chosen for both their appearance throughout all four seasons of the year and the plants’ abilities to enhance the water quality of the rainwater passing through the garden.
